Stihls largest one man chainsaw
« on: May 30, 2016, 12:30:31 AM »
I have been wanting one of these for quite awhile, but living where I do I knew chances of ever finding one local would be slim. There's just not a need for a saw with a 6 foot bar in my parts of the USA. A couple weeks ago I found not only one, but two Stihl 090 saws local and bought both of them. These saws are 137 cc's, with the big bars on them, weigh over 40 lbs. Most guys now days use these with chainsaw mills for slabbing large timber. These saws are around 35 years old and both are in great shape.

Nice finds, glad you are going to use them and not me. My Stihl with a 16 inch bar is plenty for me to get in trouble with.

They won't be seeing much use from me. I only cut about a couple cords a year of firewood and have at least 30 or 40 other smaller saws to pick from for that job. I do want to fire one up and bury the bar in some oak to see how it will pull. (just once). Actually I think I got one of them sold now. Will keep one for the collection.

I just sold off the majority of my chain saw collection. I had a McCullough 36" saw that was just too big to handle for me. I think I still have a 30" McCullough that is lost around here.  Those are pretty cool saws.

Most impressive. I didn't realize they made saws that big.
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

They don't anymore, or at least you can't buy a new 090 in the USA because of the EPA regulations. Like  chainsaw exhaust is going to pollute the world and kill us all..

Sweet saw. I got to try one out when my buddy was selling one. I only made two cuts in 12" pine but could tell it was a amazing saw. He always picks them up when he can cause he sais there great sellers no matter the condition.

My 2 year old stihl ms 441cm has 70cc. It does everything I need an then some. I can only imigane how the guys back in the day ran those big saws.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

I have an 044 that I use mostly, actually it's my favorite saw out of all of them. It was the model that your saw replaced. Actually it was the MS 440 that your saw replaced, but the 044 and MS 440 are the same saws.

Your right, I couldn't imagine using the 090 with a 6' bar on it out in the woods. I have a 28" bar also for it and it's much, much better than the 6 footer, but still it will get you worn out quick. Now days they are used mostly with the Alaskan Saw Mills for slabbing lumber and for hanging up in a guys shop for a conversation purpose. They work real good doing that.

I am late to the parade, of the 500+ saws I have owned I have never had an 090. Was visiting a friend in VA who owns a tractor dealership over Memorial Day and he had one in his shop. Not something I would want to lug around all day.
