Hello from Elkin NC
« on: September 14, 2013, 06:50:26 PM »
Good to be here, I've been reading the blacksmithing forum for a few days and it's good to find you folks

I am a machinist , been at it for about 40 yrs. Getting ready to retire and now have a new to me , Peter Wright 140 lbs anvil and many hammers .I also have 35 old, and some new tongs that I mostly bought from a neighbor that has health problems and doesn't use his tools anymore.

I've wanted to get into this ever sinse about 1957 when I went a blacksmith's shop with my dad as a small boy.  I've just finished my new portable (on wheels) forge and have used up about 50 lbs of coal in the last month practiceing my hammer blows. I just made a few things like chisels and a Hold Fast I think it's called for the anvil hardie hole.

I'm having a ball.
Good thing the forge is on wheels, the neighbors can't figure where the coal smoke is coming from :).

welcome from Illinois.

The peter wright anvil sounds great, feel free to share pictures.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

I know what you mean, but it's a real pleasure to work and not be under the stess of having to do it exactley right or throw it away. It takes the stess of the work and the day.

I'll try taking photos and get my son to post them.
