cross slide table?
« on: August 31, 2013, 06:23:57 PM »
Title says it all, not sure about it. Maybe there is a better, more accurate term for it? I want to list it to sell, but need to be informed if I do. If somebody here has an interest, let me know and I'll hold off listing it on ebay.

Are the ways adjustable? any slop in the thrust bearings? does it bind over the damaged areas? weight?

Everything moves as it should, Got me on the thrust bearings, I have no knowledge about this thing at all, enlighten me as to what they are and I can be better informed to give a correct answer.
As far as the damaged area, my pictures are to good, it isn't half as bad as the pictures make it look, and it doesn't even change a bit while moving it over them. It weighs in at a hefty 18lbs.

I listed it on ebay, at a high starting price, just because it's easier to come down than to go up. If you were wanting it, I'm sure a deal could be made.

Unless my eyes are mistaken me (I am tired!), I have one nearly identical that came with a Craftsman drill press as an accessory.  I can get pictures sometime if you'd like.

I bought it thinking it was a drill press vise, even got a small drill press with it, the drill press never made it home though. Had that sold quick. Guy that bought it from me had second thoughts when he went to pick it up out of my truck. Press stood about 18" tall and weighed all of 75 lbs. Anyway, back to the vise thing, I got to looking at it and a drill press vise didn't really make sense. At least not a typical one. Oldtools is right that it looks just like all the compound cross slides listed, so I went with that thinking somebody would let me know if I was way out in left field. So far nobody has said anything about it.

can be used on a drill press to position pieces, if press has good bearings, can also use milling bits to mill slots/flats on soft metal.
Check total travel on X & Y compounds, looks like ~ 6" to 8" travel to move pieces to end of way.
to check thrust slop, turn crank to move table, then turn opposite direction till it just moves & note how much rotation..
doesn't look like it has adjustment screws to adjust the ways inserts.  helpful to take up slop & lock ways during machining..

The top crank will turn almost 1/4 turn before the piece moves, bottom moves instantly. No idea about adjustment screws.

This looks like it may be one of those things I have to get all shiny to be able to sell. People might be surprised if they'd make an offer on the listing.
