Maybe this is more of a whatisit...Knife sharpener?
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:15:11 PM »
I remember always this hanging around my Dad's shop-I always thought it was just some kind of bench grinder, but once it became mine I don't know what it is. It's made by Sunbeam and I know they made many kitchen appliances so I wonder if it is some kind of knife sharpener.

My Dad always painted his stuff bright red. Anyway, this has a fairly standard grinding wheel on the right side, and a steel disc on the left, and what looks like a fine wetstone that rotates at a much slower speed on the top. That stone just sits in there.

Sunbeam universal home grinding machine.

Before the arrival of off shore tools Sunbeam was a broad product line, mostly for the homeowner.  They also had franchised stores in most cities where applicances were repaired, parts sold and factory seconds were sold at about half retail price.

Sunbeam was known for quality and a fortunate housewife might well own everything from floor scrubber/polisher to mixmaster along with steam & dry iron.  If she was really lucky she might own one or several of the hairdriers they offered as well.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance!

I have a Sunbeam "Beehive" toaster on my kitchen counter. It was made in 51.
It has never missed a day of work since I got it in 77.

Well actually it did miss 2 days one time.
A mouse decided it would be a great place to hang out in the night. So next morning here I come with a piece of bread and ..........................
The smell was not good. Kitty wanted it out in the trash!
So I pretended to take it out but took it down to the shop instead. I cleaned out the errant rodent, ahem,  then proceeded to break it down and clean every part of the toaster.  When I was done,  I cooked about 5 or 6 pieces of toast to make sure all was well, and then, next day, snuck it back into the kitchen.
She was not thrilled to see it, but I just shrugged and made myself toast in front of her. That did it.

Oh yeah, play for keeps some of them appliances.
