Scraper maker?

Found this old scraper and I have seen lots of Sargent brands, but this one is made the same but not marked. It had a decal at one time but not enough left to tell name. Casting is marked Made in USA and Pat. June 18, 1928, I think. Who copied the Sargent?

If this was made by Sargent, why did they cast their name into some but not this one. I could only find this style on line with the cast in name. Did they remove name and farm out to other sellers?

When Simmons or Sears etc, (a hardware chain), wanted scrapers to sell, they ordered them made with no name cast on, and put the Dunlap or Blue Grass, Wizard, Lakeside, Universal, ..........
 label on.
 You could get your own name cast in (Keen Kutter, OVB etc) but that cost extra.
 
 Its a Sargent scraper alright, and pretty top of the line.
 Besides the name game, if you were Sears and ordering thousands, you could demand a lower price per unit, and leave the manufacturer to cut corners until they met the price.  You see a lot of cut corners on hardware tools. Sometimes badly cut corners.

Thanks scottg, Strange to think when you used to buy some "off brand" tools, they may be top of the line but unmarked by that big name maker. Of course now days China marks everything and very little is top of the line.
