TechniCraft Whatsit Clamp

I'd sure like to know what this is for. It would appear to be used to clamp or squeeze something where you would not want to mar the surface, but that is a wild guess. Anyone?

There are a lot of companies using the TechniCraft name. I can't find any with the little Atomic looking symbol though. I searched "lapidary clamp" and it totally stumped Google. It told me to "check my spelling". Ha!

I can't see any use for this whatsit in lapidary work.  I started lapidary when I was 13  and did a lot of it.  This tool wouldn't have
helped me do anything, ever.

After looking at sticks and wax pots, yes, I don't see it being helpfull, at least, I couldn't find anything close to it on the supply company site I looked at, so back to square one.

There was a technicraft that made waveguides (pipes for microwaves), and the atom logo might make sense for that, but I can't imagine what possible use that thing would be for a waveguide either....

Maybe it *is* for cows....

I have some file handles that work like that but they aren't coated on the ends.

I have an identical one marked "Craftsman" that I bought at Sears in the 1980's?. I think they were sold as a general handle grip or holder for anything that would fit between the jaws.

I'm with Bus and Superzstuff I think it's a file handle...although a little fancy.  I have a couple on files, but they are rather plain compared to this one.

Thanks Bus. With your clue, I was able to find this "General" model, now being manufactured under patent number 2479661. I look forward to trying it out. If it works as advertised I'll be very happy. The shop I got it at pretty much threw it in for free since neither of us knew what it was for. I think it will work just dandy as intended. And I agree, it is a fancy one, especially in comparison to the ones I've been using.

I own one; can't remember brand right now, and too lazy to go look.  It's never worked terribly well, although it's better than jabbing yourself in the palm with a bare tang.  The plastic coating on the ends of the jaws on yours might help with grip, or not; hard to tell until you try it out.
