Thanks Frank. We met in the park about 2 weeks ago. The romance has been smoldering since then. It has been on ebay for 2 weeks now and no bids. If it is unsold two days from now, I may take the affair to the next level and start sanding. Google images turned up this one on 'Home Machinist'. This makes me sure that it is a Kennedy. Mine may be a Bonney fake that was repainted and logoed by previous owner. The photo below has fewer drawers, but the same design.
John,
I have a Crafty machinest chest from the mid 1960's that looks identical to the Kennedy above. Don't know if this helps you or not. If you want, I can snap a pic or two and take some dimensions.
Your Bonney is bigger and has more drawers but shares all the main Kennedy design features, except for the lock. It looks to be an generic replacement lock.
Whatever your box turns out to be, it's nice enough to be a keeper and could be refurbed as a nice vintage piece for next to nothing. The old brown wrinkle finish that Kennedy boxes came with never did much for me; it's a look, but kinda drab and boring.
