Spring Band Clamp Pliers
« on: May 11, 2012, 06:39:33 AM »
I'm seeking your input/guidance/assistance with choosing a pair of pliers that will work well to install/remove spring band clamps in the 1/2" - 2-1/2" range.  I'm looking for a USA product, preferably not new, where you can attest to its quality and use (and in particular vouch for it holding the clamp well).

Thanks in advance!

If the clamps you're referring to are the round ones that used to be found on radiator hoses and heater hoses, then I can recommend the ones that Proto made.  I've had a pair for about 40 years and they worked fine.  They look like a pair of slip joint plies with deep grooves cut in the end to hold the clamp tips.  The only problem is that they didn't have any way to keep the clamp compressed, you had to hold them while you tried to work the hose off.

K-D also made a pair that I think were better.  If memory serves, and it often doesn't anymore, they had a ratchet mechanism  that held the clamp compressed while you worked the hose off.

Thanks, Mike!  I like the idea of the KD that might clamp.  Is this an example of the KD pliers you mention?

I also found the pair pictured - I'm thinking I may like them better even though this version is newer.  Maybe I could find an older pair that would fit in with my box better.

The ones on eBay are exactly what I was referencing.  It's a little hard to tell, but the round tips on the end rotate to any any position you may require.  To my mind the most versatile of all.  Good luck and thanks for the welcome.  Mike
