A sewing machine screwdriver?
« on: January 21, 2012, 08:45:47 PM »
I pillaged the screwdriver bins today and found a few gems. I like the little ones that filter their way down to the bottom where nobody but the serious go. There are 2 that I don't know what they might have been made for. Left to right in the big picture,  they are: The first what's it, no markings,
a little mushroom shaped thingy about 3" with a square shank,
an older USA Crescent stubby,
Irwin stubby,
a tiny T8 or so torx,
the second what's it is the teardrop shaped screwdriver with a little metal keyhole apparatus in the middle. It must have come with a machine that needed that little opening for something. It is only marked ''Japan",
a nice pocket clip Dunlap with nice engraving on the clip, a Quick Lock Salt Lake City, which is one of those with the split shaft and a sleeve that slides up and down, manipulating the position of the tips for screw holding, also with a pocket clip,
a nice Enderes USA pocket clip Phillips,
a tiny handled Vaco with a fat P2 blade,
a scratch awl marked 100000V W. Germany (don't know what that means either)
and the bigger ones, a Par-X No. 1 phillips,
a Thorsen 80M USA 1/4" driver,
a 13" Williams 50G and finally
a Klein USA 550 also sort of a what's it because it has a scratch awl type tip but I can't find any references for it. Not too exciting in the picture department but it was fun for me.

Ehhh....would that be a doorknob?
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Ehhh, I'm gonna say I don't think so. It's not a very good picture there. It does kind of look door knobby in that picture I guess. Too tiny though I think, shaft too short and there are mallet marks on the back of it. Doll house door knob, but I am open to other possibilities.

That may be a wire stripper on the teardrop.

That's a jeweler's tool, used for setting cut stones into findings.   I've got one from my old stone-cutting days, along with burnishers for pressing in bezels and off-set pliers for bending in prongs.

Thanks everyone, you're the best.
A wire stripper built into the screwdriver is just what it looks like; very clever.
And, a stone setting tool would explain the little tap marks on the top of the tool. I find the damnedest things at this one shop. If the boys there don't know what something is, it goes in the junk bin. Love that.
Now, how about that Klein? Is the 550 an awl of some kind or has the tip been modified?

So, Branson, I don't know if you saw this one in the What's Its but could this also be a jewelers tool of some sort. It would seem suitable for the very same sort of thing, just that the tip is much smaller and is round rather than square.  No 'tap' marks on the top either. What do you think?

My wife had a sewing machine once that came with a little screwdriver that had a flat teardrop shaped handle like that but it was an aluminum handle.

If you ever decide to part with that Par-X screwdriver I know an alien that would be most interested.

The 5 is a 6, 650 is still in the catalog as scratch awl....

Here's a shiny new one....

Of course, it's a 6. That spot of missing chunk was in just the right spot. I even had the magnifying glass out on that one. I had a 50/50 chance and guessed wrong. Thank you!

Are you interested in all things Par-x or just certain ones. I finally tried selling some stuff on ebay and one of the things I sold was a very nice ParX line wrench. Was it you that got it or is that not something you hunt?

Could be...  I haven't  seen one like this.  The size looks right for jewelry work, but could it be a clock makers tool?
