I don't know if "Krylon" still makes a clear lacquer, but I swear by their paint, as it actually sticks, and dries!

Well, I, for one, don't polish the brass. I prefer the aged patina.

I haven't been able to get any!
I have tried a bunch and they all make the brass look like crap.  You get the polish mirror bright, and then coat it, and it turns to chalk before your eyes! From sparkling gold to dull yellow in one heartbeat.

 I found "the good stuff".
Its the industrial coating they use in the plumbing industry. Its a low baked coating, keeps the brass shiny as a diamond,  and it lasts a long time.
Except I can't get it! They only sell it by the barrel.

I even tried to trick my way into some, pretending to be a small manufacturer of brass boxes, and tried to get a couple quarts for "sample purposes".

"Of course, be glad to help you,  no problem, we'll fix you right up, ...................................... what is your address?
We will send our salesman with the samples, out to your plant!."      they said
  Grrrrr

That sounds like the temperature was too cold and/or there was too much humidity in the air.   I had that problem once, most inconveniently, as I was rushing a project for a local museum -- a case of spray in haste, repent at leisure.

As far as I know, Krylon still makes the stuff.

<Grin>  Wasn't the plant closed for re-tooling?
