Upon closer examination I guess they are not files. Screwdrivers maybe. Any idea as to the timeline and use of these. (other then to tighten and loosen screws)

What is the hinged piece with 3 segments on the righthand side of the first picture?

Hello, Analog. I bought them thinking the same, solid steel screwdrivers. I am still looking for info on them . I know that Crescent & Vlchek made solid steel/iron screwdrivers, but a different profile!

Almost certainly Starrett 85 series dividers, likely the 85A (shorter of the two offerings in this series).

They're completely worthless, and I'll be happy to take them off your hands...no, actually, they command a silly price on eBay.  I've been casually watching for a pair of the 85A dividers for ages, and, on eBay, they shoot past what I'm willing to offer almost immediately.

Silly price, but they are some of the best, maybe THE best, dividers ever.

That divider with the removable tips is a handy tool. I have one like it. You can replace one point with a pencil to use as a compass. I also made an insert holding a razor knife tip to use as a gasket cutting compass.

The small Xacto knife handles should fit right in - the clamps hold 5/16" diameter rods, pencils, etc.
