Different Irwin auger bit set
« on: April 07, 2019, 01:54:22 PM »
I have a lot of boxed auger bit sets and had little interest in this one at auction yesterday. Until!  Was a choice table and it finally got down to $10.00 and another guy had choice.  He picked a wrench and I said I will also take one and took this auger bit set and the 4 braces that went with it.  Appeared to be missing one auger and I didn't need it but planned to sell it until I got it home and looked at it.  Look closely, it is a 14 bit set with an adjustable and the long adjustable cutter in its special clip.  I added the adjustable, the long cutter was already in its clip.  It is a matched set and as you can see in fine condition.  I would have picked it earlier if I had looked closely and noticed it was different from any other set I have seen.  Anyone else have such a set?

No, don't have one.  That's pretty tasty.

I have an early Irwin auger bit set. It’s complete with early logo Irwin bits but much smaller than your nice new set.

Nice find coolford!  It sounds like you lucked out coming across a set you weren’t looking for, particularly since it’s in mint, complete condition.  Sounds like you got it for the right price too!  Do I have a set like that?  Heck no!  My tool collection is not in your league when it comes to size and diversity.  This will be yet another thread that I enjoy from the sidelines.

Here is an early Irwin expansive bit in the original box with instructions that I found at the Tahoe flea yesterday. I found a 1939 Irwin listing on the Internet for the bit.

What a clean set!  Did you have to touch them up--or have they been cared for well over the years?

The pieces are exactly like I found them. The box came with a little genuine sawdust inside so I know it was used at least once.
