fayette r plumb broad axe
« on: October 22, 2018, 05:08:48 PM »
I don't know where I should put this post. So I'll put it here. I've got a broad axe (head, no handle) , a little under 8 pounds, 10 3/4  cutting edge, .  I can  make out the Fayette r p …. b
I'm assuming plumb, right?  Unfortunately, I can't see a "co" or an "inc" on it. It is just the letters stamped out... a little crooked... no emblem or anything else. Also says cast steel , looks like it was over stamped  on top of each other... if that makes any sense, which it probably doesn't .  Does anyone have any input on age, value, how common or uncommon it is? It is a single bevel (isn't that when one side is sharpened and the other side is flat?). Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't have a picture right now. The thing is a beast!
cheers

Yes - "broad axe" or "broad hatchet" (the pattern comes in both sizes) generally refers to an axe or hatchet which is sharpened just on one side.  The entire head is oriented toward that side, so the head is generally flat on the back side of the bevel.  I've got one that's set up for right handers (which I'm not), but even with the wrong-for-me hand, it's a darned handy tool for wasting away material when I'm shaping a board.  I don't use it nearly as often as I should.
