Flat Rate Box
« on: September 28, 2017, 11:22:44 AM »
Hello, I just found out about this today. I try to ship with the USPS and use their Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes. I was only familiar with the 3 common sizes, Small. Medium, & large. They make what is referred to as a Game Board Box, which is a Long Large Priority Mail Flat Rate Box. ( FRB-GB )on their website, you can have the boxes shipped to your home address for free. You can ship up to 70 pounds in weight for one price, I believe the retail price is approx. $18.00. Great for long wrenches, I am also considering it for some of the longer Jointer Planes. Interior dimensions of box are  3-1/4 x 11-3/4 x 23-5/8.  Other versions of the Small, Medium, and Large boxes are also available. This may be old news to some. Regards, Lou

Yes,those are good. Also try the Regional Flat Rate boxes. A little less weight but better shipping prices when the buyer is in the right region. Also only available by mail.

I have started putting strips of double sided tape in them to help keep the items in the box when the USPS rips holes in the boxes playing basket ball with the boxes. I also like to wrap items in brown paper bags with lots of duct tape. The USPS is getting worse all the time. We have a lot of Cliff Clavens at our P.O.

Yep.  The game board boxes won't take a jointer plane assembled - they're not high/thick enough - but you can disassemble it and set the body flat in the box.

As to packing, your local appliance store gets big sheets of foam plastic in various thicknesses, used as packing for the washers/dryers/fridges/etc.  Mine's happy to have me take it; yours may be too.

Hello, Bill. Thanks for the reply. I usually disassemble any planes that I ship, all of the appendages are just screaming for someone to snap them off. In addition to the overwhelming number of tools that I have here, I also have a great source for used/recyclable packaging material from work. Peanuts, bubble wrap, foam, air bags, etc. !!!!!!!! I will check in at the local appliance store tomorrow!!!!!!!

I also like the Regional Rate Boxes - the come in two sizes.  The cost is based on distance, but even with the max distance they cost a bit less than similar Flat Rate Boxes.  And they are also free - shipped to your door.

Empty water bottles work great for packing.
