Photobucket - 3rd Party Hosting
« on: July 01, 2017, 12:18:54 PM »
I've noticed a lot of 3rd party posting notices from Photobucket.

I use Photobucket, but when I checked some of my posted pics they looked fine. Could someone check my picture of SK sets at
http://www.papawswrench.com/vboard/index.php?topic=22207.msg127227#msg127227

I followed their link to www.photobucket.com/p500 - it talked about a subscription upgrade ( I guessed that there is a fee for it)

If my pics are there,  I'll post the method I am using to avoid the third party posting issue to compare notes with how some of the cut off folks do it.

It could be that:
1. I'm cut off also, I just can't see it.
2. They haven't got to me, or I haven't reached some critical point to get their attention.
3. I'm posting pictures from Photobucket in a way that works somehow.

From Photobuckets website:

*What is 3rd Party Hosting?
Photobucket defines 3rd party hosting as the action of embedding an image or photo onto another website. For example, using the <img> tag to embed or display a JPEG image from your Photobucket account on another website such as a forum, Etsy, eBay auction listings, a blog, etc. is definitively 3rd party hosting.

Why Photobucket?
Photobucket continues to have the distinct pleasure of hosting 15 billion photos from 100 million unique users since inception 14 years ago.

The subscriptions we offer are price competitive & we offer unlimited 3rd party hosting, no matter how popular your image is on your forum, blog or online store.

Additionally, we offer our users the opportunity to promote their business or products with the rest of the Photobucket community.

I use the <img> tag, so my guess is that my usage hasn't been enough to get noticed.

I started a new account with Mrs Chillys information to check it out.  3rd party hosting is included with their "Plus 500" plan, pic below. Only $39.99 per month, or $3399.99 per year.

It kind of sucks, because it was so much easier than sizing pictures and attaching them.

I store thousands of photos on Photobucket and pay a small amount per year for storage. My storage is only 33% full.

I have thousands of pictures hosted on Photobucket also, but I have never paid any fees. That being said, I loath the place with a venom. It used to be rather easy and quick to upload photos there and then link to them for use on forums like this one. But over the past couple of years there have gotten to be so many ads, and the upload speeds have gotten so incredibly slow, and there are now so many "clicks" required (each with their own slow-loading ad) in order to do the simplest things, that I only use the site as a last resort.

I suspect most of the annoying problems I'm experiencing are intended as a not-so-subtle incentive to pay for an upgraded level of service, but I'm too cheap and obstinate to do so. Instead I just don't go there anymore.
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

This has been my experience with them to a T.... they were great a decade ago (or whenever I started using them) but it runs horribly now, and it's so cumbersome to use... I'm starting to look for a new hosting site, but I haven't attacked it very heavily yet. For the time being, I'm just not really posting many photos until I get something going...

If you're looking for a new site... I recently found https://vgy.me which works really quite nicely. It's fast, free, and doesn't even require an account...

The one caveat is you need to keep a bunch of codes saved if you wanna go back and delete it... But I'm just using it for sharing pictures of tools, I don't have a need to go back and delete, so I don't bother :P

From Photobucket.com Terms of Use

Last revised July 5, 2017

The Bold, Italicized and Underlined parts pertain.

If a free account Member has engaged in image linking and/or 3rd party image hosting and subsequently receives a notice from Photobucket stating that their free account is not eligible for such services and their ability to use image linking and 3rd party image hosting has been restricted or suspended, they will need to become a Plus Account Member by selecting the appropriate Plus Account (not all Plus Accounts allow image linking or 3rd party image hosting so please select carefully). Alternatively, they may always log into their Photobucket account, download their images and use a non-Photobucket resource for such services in the future.
•   Ad-free Account : The Ad-free Account offers Members the ability to use the Site without seeing any third party banner advertisements when logged into your Ad-free Account (note, viewers of your images within Photobucket will see ads unless they, too, have Plus accounts and you will continue to see Photobucket offers and announcements). This account level is available for $2.49 / month, payable by the Member on a monthly recurring basis. The Ad-free Account does not allow any image linking or 3 rd party image hosting.
•   Plus Account : The Plus Account offers several paid options that give the Member more storage, bandwidth, 3rd party image hosting, image linking and/or other services as outlined below. Please note that Plus Account subscriptions are billed annually at the commencement of the service. Notwithstanding, Photobucket may also offer a monthly billing option for its Plus Accounts (see terms and restrictions, below).
•   Available Plus Account Plans : Photobucket offers the following Plus Account Plans:
o Plus 50 Plan: 52 GB of Storage for $59.99 / Year. The Plus 50 Plan does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting.
o Plus 100 Plan: 102 GB of Storage for $99.99 / Year. The Plus 100 Plan allows for unlimited image linking but does not allow 3rd party image hosting.
o Plus 500 Plan: 502 GB of Storage and unlimited bandwidth for $399.99 / Year. The Plus 500 Plan allows for unlimited image linking and unlimited 3rd party image hosting.

· ANY PAYING MEMBER WHOSE PLUS ACCOUNT WAS IN GOOD STANDING AS OF JUNE 1, 2017, SHALL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE ALL THE PHOTOBUCKET SERVICES THAT WERE AVAILABLE TO HIM/HER ON SUCH DATE, INCLUDING IMAGE LINKING AND 3RD PARTY IMAGE HOSTING, UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 2018 AS LONG THEY MAINTAIN THEIR CURRENT PLUS ACCOUNT SUBSCRIPTION OR A HIGHER LEVEL PLUS ACCOUNT SUBSCRIPTION DURING SUCH PERIOD OF TIME.

So, basically, photobucket just sawed its own legs off... No one is gonna pay $400 a year for image hosting... I sure as heck wont, anyway...

I guess I need to look into saving all the events I have done on Photobucket.

You might have to jump thru some hoops PaPaw.

This is a quote from GG by goodfellow: I just did an experiment with PB and tried to download a small sized photo album from my account. It looks as though you can download an album (their system zip files the entire album before it downloads), BUT the resolutions of most of the pics are all distorted. It seems that they make it very difficult for you to do a volume download without a penalty -- namely resolution.

Here is the whole thread if you would like to readhttp://www.thegaragegazette.com/index.php?topic=30781.0

This move by Photobucket has caused a storm over on another forum, britbike.com.  A majority of posters there have been using PB and now any threads that had PB images are destroyed.  There's just no way we can go back into all those topics and replace the photos.

There was some mention on britbike regarding the financial sense of this.  PB may get a boost from a number of people who will pay for the service but in the long run - there are too many free services out there.  This may be some kind of stock manipulation leading to a sellout.  "If it doesn't make sense, there's money behind it".

I will be using postimage.org now.  It is free, there is essentially no limit, and all they ask is some of your photos link back to postimage.  It has the simplest sign up and is very fast loading (if you have downsized your photos for the web - my web photos are all 960x720 pixels and they load fast).

You must already be a paying customer.
