There are pieces like that on the end of a chain on some fence stretchers.

For sure part of a wire stretcher. In a couple days if I can find it I will post pictures of a complete one. Patent 1880 something. You can still buy them but now they are pressed tin instead of cast.

I have a complete one at my old house, but someone else will probably beat me to posting a picture.  I am saving it to repair my neighbor's fence.  I slid off the road in the snow last winter and knocked out some of his fence.  I am waiting for the weeds to die down to fix it (that and a good dose of procrastination).

Uh, huh...Saturday turned out to be a nice day. You could have mended fence then.....just kidding! Did the wife enjoy your "critter" you built??
