Looking for hickory
« on: August 14, 2015, 10:57:32 PM »
So I have my grandpas axe an it needs a handle. I could buy one but I really want to make one. Only problem is I have no wood to make the handle. I was wondering if anyone had a peice of hickory they would sell me or knows a good source.

I have been to 3 local hardwood places an they only had veneer or nothing big enough or just large slabs.

Its for a handle so it needs straight grained an relatively knot free. I would like it to be at least 2 1/4" X 39" that way I have some room to work with. Really I would like enough to make at least two handles, in case one doesn't turn out good.

If anyone knows anything or has any advice please let me know :)
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

Be careful of common wood suppliers; too often pecan is sold as hickory.  Works fine for cabinet work, but pecan does not have the flex that makes hickory the best handle wood around.  Pecan will sting your hands.  Also, you want the sap wood, not the heart wood.

You might try someone like "House Handles" and see if they would sell you a piece of hickory.
