HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: August 11, 2015, 02:54:41 PM »
I'll be asking for a lot of help on planes...... considering my recent purchase. I've just started sorting some of the metal planes.... already a ton of names I know nothing about. I don't know if some of these planes are higher quality--- what any of them are worth, any info would be great. I'll get pictures. But, for now, here are some of the names I don't know very much about. Usually I'm not that concerned about what they are worth. But, I've got to sell A LOT of planes and I have no idea where to start. I know I can look at past auctions on ebay. But, I'd love to know more about them.
Falcon/ pope
rapier
este
shelton--- are those us and england?
corsair
brillant-- I have one with a kuntz blade and one with a santo blade
salmens
talco
darex
woden
cheers

I would say you could sell all of those and never look back.

Shelton IIRC is American, and has at least some collector interest.  Woden is an English brand, and I might be interested.  Do you have only one Woden or are there more?

The rest for the most part are lower end users planes.  Some I haven't heard of before.

bird, on the list of plane names, you have to keep the last one, "bird" it was named after you.

p.s. 1 thing missing from your pictures is a Christmas tree.

just kidding, have a good day.

There is, or probably was, an English company called Rapier.  I think they mainly did imitations of Record and Marples planes.  I believe they're respectable tools.  I just looked on That Auction Site, and Rapier tools were getting pretty decent prices, in general.

The Corsair planes I've seen were junk, best sold to someone who needs a small boat anchor.  But you should look at the one you've got, in case it was built in a period of higher quality.

Never heard of this "Cheers" brand.  Was that a promo tie-in to the TV show?  Don't recall much woodworking being discussed in that bar.

Yes, the corsier is a hunk of junk. Maybe I'll slip it into a "lot" of planes and get rid of the thing that way!! I'm surprised no one has mentioned the pope/ falcon planes (australia, i guess). These things are a SERIOUS hunk of metal!!!!! Each and everyone of them is a darn thick peice o steel! I weighed a stanley 5 1/2 and a pope 5 1/2--- pope was a whole pound more! They look incredibly well made to me. As you can imagine, I haven't had a chance to work with one yet. I'm resisting the temptation to start trying each and every one of them out...... I'm trying desperately to stay somewhat "on task" by making sure I'm putting some on ebay everyday.
I found two more brands today- mohawk and a 102 plane with "Blosta" on it. A lot of these shelton planes look similar to a sargent "auto set" (I think that's what they're called..... got five of those!!!)
cheers

But trying them is part of being on task -- you gotta tell potential buyers about how they work, right?

no auto salesperson tactics from bird.
