Who made it?
« on: September 12, 2011, 08:03:07 AM »
I know it is a hammer saw set, but who made it, and when? It has an eagle with a sheild, and what looks like an incomplete name above it. To me, it reads "D.P.Bald?????". I put the question marks on because I would "think" the rest of the name has been worn off?. Does anyone recognize this Logo, and or saw set, which I googled for at least 2 hours? Any info., or thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Wayne

Can't help with the maker, but I would date it to the 19th Century, post Civil War,  by the Eagle mark.

It looks like a combination of the saw swadge (Ebay item 110722341600) and the 1848 Stillman saw set for hand saws.  There's a similar set on eBay, #120221122270.

I think Eric Sloane documents a set of this kind in one of his books.  It's one of those that go into the forest with the loggers, and would be driven into a stump (note the pointed end on yours) to set the two man saws on site, as you know, smacked with a hammer to set the teeth.

I had no luck with D.P. Bald or D.P. Baldwin either.

At The Saw Set Collector's Resource, http://members.acmenet.net/~con12a/, Mark Conley invites you to provide a picture, which he will display with your name as owner; he may be your best source of information.  You may want to look at the book he mentions, by Todd Friberg.

How about R F Baldwin, partner and later owner of Baldwin, Tuthill & Bolton , makers of bandsaw sets, later to become Oliver machinery....?

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.
