What is It ?

Does this little baby look familiar to anyone? It is made from an aluminum block, and has a razor blade marked stanley usa on the front end. The blade is secured with what looks like a 6-32 screw and washer, and when loose, allows it to push forward, to just beyond the edge. BUT, the blade does not lower enough to touch the surface it is sitting on. There are 8 groves that are about 1/8" deep, and go all the way thru, on the front edge only, and about 1/4" back from the front edge. No markings on it, except for the razor blade. I googed the stanley tool site, and see nothing to compare it to. Of course, my only guess is a small hobby plane, but like I said, the blade does not go low enough to make contact with the surface it sits on, so I cannot see it ever touching the work? Any thoughts, or guesses much appreciated!

Check out this site for a description of how these model ship builders make cutters for their parts. Towards the end of the page are some pictures showing some tools somewhat similar to yours. I don't know if that's on the right track or not, but it does look similar in some ways. What do you think?

I don't know if that's on the right track or not, but it does look similar in some ways. What do you think?

Yes, by similar I only meant in principle not design. Yours is for something very specific, but might be a tough one to find. I hope you do find out what it is soon.

My brain hurts just looking at the teeny work on the HMS Victory!

But it still works good enough to think that, if the blade won't touch the surface below the bed, then it was made to trim whatever stood above the surface in the grooves.  It would probably work to maintain the precise length of Don Johnson's stubble so that he always has a 5 o'clock (tomorrow) shadow (in my sometimes diseased imagination).  Or some kind of razor cut ...  What would one trim  to length?  Thin out bristles on a brush?
