Feelings about 9-11: How do you all feel?
« on: September 08, 2011, 09:55:31 PM »
For some reason the events of Sept. 11th, 2001 hit me hard. Just couldn't wrap my head around how a handful of people could kill almost 3000 American civilians. Every anniversary is a downer for me. And,this being the Big 10, I'm not at all looking forward to the weekend.
Probably going to avoid TV and radio, maybe rent a bunch of light-hearted and/or humorous movies and stay home with the wife.
Am I alone in feeling so bummed about this event? How do you guys/girls feel about it?

I will let this stand as long as we don't get into any outright nasty discussion.

I watched the whole thing for days on TV, and still feel down about the whole thing. It will never leave my mind.

I was shocked and horrified at the time and pretty much glued to the TV or radio. 10 years later and my reaction is still shock and horror it hasn't tempered at all.

I just can't comprehend the mentality or thinking behind an act like this.

Thanks for letting this conversation roll, papaw... I know it's a risk, on your part.  I'm glad that you keep things in "check." Politics wind up in a bad place. But, I think shared experiences have a place here among friends..... but it  is a fine line!
I have a different experience than I'm sure any of you have had. I'm pretty sure no one will understand my experience.  My experience with 9/11 is that I don't remember it at all. Those of you that know me fairly well know that I went through a series of 17 ECTs. (electric shock therapy.... think Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over The Cookoos Nest).
It would be impossible for anyone to know what it's like to have a series of electrodes stuck on both sides of your brain in order to brace for  an induced seizure. Anyhow, apparently, during that time period is when 9/11 happened.  The folks that I lived with said that every time I came back from the hospital they had to explain to me, AGAIN, about 9/11.
I suppose I was blessed in not having to deal with the immediate trauma of 9/11.  But, my friends were faced with the burden of telling me over and over again about what had happened within our country.... 9/11.  So, I guess I relived 9/11 nine times or so.  But, as much of my life was at that time, everything seemed like a dream, a constant nightmare.
I have a niece and a nephew.   I have this constant feeling that at some point in their lives they will be asked to interview persons that lived through 9/11. I have this awfull feeling that they'll ask me about how I lived through 9/11.  I dread that day, because all I could tell them is that I don't remember that day.
I've made it a point to never have kids. I don't know how I'll ever tell my kids that years of my memory are gone.  At some point I'm going to have to "fess up" and tell them that their "Aunt Birdie" spent months in a mental ward. That will lead to me having to tell them I spent weeks in hospitals, which led to involuntary ECTs.  That will lead to those kids really wondering what all of the scars on my wrists, arms, and hands are from..... and I don't know how I'll ever explain that.
And so, I'm probably the only person in America that doesn't remember 9/11.  And I'm probably the only person that was told about 9/11 time and after time again.  I suppose 17 times..... that's how many times persons had to explain to me about 9/11. But, I didn't have that immediate horror that our country must have felt on 9/11.  I think my mother tried to call me when that all took place. I don't think she knew I was already in the hospital at that time. But, I hate that she was worried to death about me over 9/11.... she knew that would send me off "the deep end."  She didn't know I'd already fallen off the cliff.
I know so many persons have lost loved ones in 9/11, and my heart and prayers go out to those folks.
Silent bidder extraordinaire!

I still find it difficult to come to terms with, I remember watching it on TV and it was like a movie, it just didn't seem real at the time somehow.

I believe it was the worst most cowardly attack on a civilian population in percent times, 300 Australians died along with your country men and women that day. The whole western world is with you all today. We must stay strong and stand together through these times.

God bless.

It's a hard one.  I was on my way to work when the first news came on the radio.  I thought I must have misheard.  It was still unfolding when I  got to work, and all the staff were standing around a television watching in shock.

It was also an attack on the world, not just the US.  The people in the Twin Towers were international.

I decline to try to understand the mentality of this and following acts in Spain and Indonesia.  And later in London.  Despicable!

Pawpaw-thanks for letting this stand as long as we can keep politics and religion out of it

I did a video a while back. If you skip to about a minute an fourty seconds it gets better.

That should basicly sum it all up on my views
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

The wife and I had visited the Twin Towers in Oct 2000. She doesn't like tall buildings, but I made her go with me to the observation floor, and enjoy the view. Actually, it was pretty foggy that day. Couldn't really see the Statue of Liberty!
Anyway, she's always afraid something might happen, and I tell her what can happen? We're in a city of 10 million people, in broad daylight? Eleven months later, I'm reliving her words.
We went back in Oct 2006, and were just stunned at the open pit. Now it's 5 years after that. Still just shaking my head some days.

Thanks for the stories!

My feelings arenot nice, I hope the bastards who organized this horrific crime rot in hell. I worked in WTC many many times and often thought what an easy target it made.

I remember it well. I had just awoke from a good nights sleep. Was listening to a morning syndicated radio show when they announced what had happened. I could hear the emotion in the radio hosts voice. I went to the living room and turned on the TV. Still get sick at my stomach when I think about that morning.

I agree with Eddie, hope the ones responsible rot.

Well, they had a 9-11 special running on some channel this morning, with scenes and interviews from the Flight 93 memorial in Pennsylania. Had to turn it off - couldn't handle it.

I was taking a shower and my wife came in to tell me. A friend had called to let us know and she found out from him.

At the time I had my own business and my employee and I sat and listened to the radio and checked the internet all day. I just didn't have the heart for either of us to work.  No one came in all day and all the phone calls were about what was happening.

On September 10th 2001, (monday) I saw my first Koran; I didn’t know what it was. I was in the private office of one of the world’s most renowned eye surgeons; it was across the border in Canada. I had made an appointment to come back the next week for the surgery. Well on Wednesday I canceled. I told them I wasn’t going to deal with the 4-hour border crossings. Truth is I could not wrap my mind around the image of the Koran sitting on his coffee table.

I try to be tolerant of others belief systems. But I have no tolerance for people that want to kill us.

I am sorry if this is religious or political, but it is how I feel.
