unknown maker hex drive socket set
« on: August 05, 2014, 07:48:51 PM »
Bought this set recently  figuring it was Indestro or Duro and Alloy would tell me which. Alas I don't find it on Alloy and I need to know maker so I can add correct ratchet.
Only marking is (made in USA) and size designation. Suppose its Dollar General or some such well known maker.

Duro's line knurling pattern is shorter than that. I have seen those sockets before, but
I still have not the slightest clue who made them....

I have seen that holder before also, but it was empty...

(If the fractions were straight, I would say New Britain)

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

It's New Britain. Probably later model Husky.

New Britain looks right. Top 1/4 drive looks identical to Husky set in alloy. This set does not have pat date stamped on bottom. For some reason I skipped right over New Britain when I did initial search. At least these senior moments don't last long.

Fractions with a  -  between numbers is D-I  where it could be Bogs, New Britian or another with the /  between numbers.     D-I tend to be shorter sockets and poorer steel than the others too.

They can be used yet if need be, for the better brands at least.   D-I tend to tax my nerves by mushing but the rest hold up well.
The only bad tool is the one that couldn't finish the job.  Ironicly it may be the best tool for the next job.

A similar set with the similar holder less the 1/4 drive sockets on Ebay was dated  Dec 31, 1918 which corresponds to Sedgley patent #1269,558.   Chuck Garrett

Also the holder was stamped Pat # 1938900   H. H. Chase.  Acording to AA it seems to be New Brittain altho there seems to be little info on Sedgley or the connection between them.
