Hiya from Sydney Australia!

Hiya all!

My name is Benjamin Wharton and I live in Sydney, Australia. I'm a fitter and turner by trade and have recently turned ('scuse the pun!) my hand to archaeology finishing a degree at Sydney University. I have begun to delve into maritime and industrial archaeology as it suits my background and historical interests.

Fitter and Turner?  A mechanic fits parts and turns wrenches. Be interesting to know what a fitter /turner does.
Interesting how we all " speak" English language , but it has so many different meanings.

A fitter and turner is a plant mechanic with machining skills. It is an apprenticeship trade here.

Welcome Ben, from a bit further north.
Fitter and Turner, Yep I agree with Batz and Ben  that's what were are.   Turner dates back to when the lathe was the main stay of the machine shop. The ad for my apprentership (1957) said fitter and Turner, but  the indenture papers said Fitter and Machinist!?

Out here I'm a fitter, indentured in 1982.  Fire sprinkler-fitter or pipe fitter. Figured out in the first five years that the office was warmer and became a designer or engineering tech and mgmt.  Always have kept my card and paid dues though.

Do you know the difference between a fitter and a plumber here in Denver?
