need advice on big shear purchase

BIG shear for sale at local auction.

should I buy it? what to look for?

can I move it with ordinary equipment?

Depends if you are buying it to use it or resell it.  Is it single or 3 phase? It looks like it probably works. Try to move the top blade looking for badly worn pins. Look for major chunks out of the blade. Dull can usually be sharpened. Start it if you can. Listen for nasty motor and drive noises. I can't tell what it has for a clutch.  Check that it works. Has the frame been cracked and welded? If it is open gears, are they worn out or missing teeth? If it is a closed gearbox, how bad does it leak? Was it used in a steel fab shop or a scrap yard. If it was in a scrap yard, it is probably pretty tired all over. See if you can find a tag that gives the rated thickness that it will cut. Usually with those, if it fits in the jaws, it will cut it.

open gears, but in a OSHA style cage, hard to get too personal

in its life prolly all of the above, it's last owner was a building contractor

If Rusty is correct, this old shear is about 100 years old.  I'm betting that it will last another hundred. I went through some of the auction items. Will everything go that cheap?

It's an odd auction format.

one day, mid week, you can go see the stuff.

bidding will end next Sunday,

I seldom get great deals on these, last time I got one item ( huge electric welder, weighed 500 pounds, didn't work, $25)

Shear went for $4000, too much for me.

I did get a "valve grinder set"

 it wasn't exactly what I was thinking, but pretty cool nonetheless
