Title: Papaw is retiring!!
Post by: Papaw on December 11, 2014, 03:58:22 AM
I have talked about it for two years and now it is happening!
Almost 4 AM and I am finishing the second week of training my replacement. I am retiring as of next Thursday morning.
I have been with this company since they started in 2002, and worked for the same owners since February of 1989. When this one started, I was 60 and promised them 10 years. It has been a little over 12 years, and the time is now.
A trucking/logistics company and I have been everything from a driver to Safety , Driver Services, and for the last few years- night dispatch.

 Papaw,

many thoughts have already been covered today. but yes, your collection may expand a tad,
but you will have more good time to enjoy them.

also as a retiree, I sometimes wonder how I got so much done even when I was still working.
today, time goes by faster than you may think it will.

as you ga about, you will notice things that you had not seen before, due to the fact that you
were always thinking of your job.

take the time to enjoy the friends that you did not have real time to spend with them.

good luck, Frank

Congratulations, and welcome to the club (I've got my eight year pin now)!  Much of what's been said in other posts sure rings true.

One comment: you were there for twelve years, and you're too sensible to have worked somewhere you weren't enjoying.  So, as you enter the period when YOU get to decide what you're doing (well, you and Mrs. Papaw, if there is one), think about what you liked about your work, and make sure you've got some of that in the life you're building now.  The people I saw at work who failed in their retirements were often the people who'd really enjoyed what they did, and didn't know how to replace it when it was gone.  The other retirement failures were the people who didn't know what to do with their time, but I doubt that's going to be a problem for you.

I can say that I enjoyed about 97% of the job and will miss a lot of it, but I won't have any problem staying busy and enjoying not having to go to a job  every working day.

Aunt Phil said-
Quote
DON'T do it Pawpaw.
As a retarded man er I mean retired, I have sufficient experience to warn you against pulling the plug.
I tell you straight up, it's harder and more time consuming than the job ever was.

You have no idea how many jobs will come your way because "you're retired and have time to do them"
You have no idea how many people will remember your phone number, and call expecting you to work for free "because you're retired".

Within 6 months you'll be wondering where the hell you ever had time for a job.
It's also dangerous!
More retired people croak, cease breathing, than any other population demographic!

We ain't even going to talk about the salesmen who find your phone number or the professional moochers.

STAY ON THE JOB.

I know all about all that! It has been happening for the last 10 years since lots of folks thought I should have already been retired!
I know exactly what I an getting into, and don't intend to croak soon, nor go back to work.

Well, if you INSIST, remember to run your Rolodex through the copier, or better yet, take it with you.
That's the single most valuable thing on the desk, computers crash, but a decent Rolodex will survive damn near anything.
Don't bother stocking up on pens, damn things dry up before you get around to using them, and the Dollar Store always has more.  Legal pads and drawing pads will never go out of use, and beat hell out of drawings or notes on a napkin.

Blow some bucks on a decent desk chair for yourself too, Hag makes good ones, and a quality chair under your ass is one of the best investments there is.

Schedule is one of the most important parts of being retired.  I've researched it, and you really want to schedule about an hour between getting up and the first nap of the day for coffee, light breakfast, and saying to hell with it as you toss the day's stack of notes of things that need to get done.  Practice up on saying "I wish I could help you, but I don't remember how to do that.".  You also want to practice your dazed old fart look.  It is quite useful in supermarkets and such places and sweet young ladies will come to your aid.  Just be careful using it if the wife is with you!

You also want to condition people to let the damn phone ring a while.  Point out the phone rings every 6 seconds, and you ain't sitting next to the sumbeach any more.  Also disconnect the answering machine.  Ain't that many people worth calling back anyhow.

Feel free to give grumpy and disinterested replies to questions.  Younger people expect it, and since they are going to call you an old fart anyhow, you might as well give them a reason to.  You also want to keep in mind that places like MickyDs and Walmart are looking for employees.  That is handy to know so you can tell anyone calling for a donation to go get a job and donate what they make.

Rest assured you'll be on the list for hearing aid salesmen soon.  When they call ask them to repeat multiple times.  Then make an appointment to go for the free test.  Show up a day early and complain they shouldn't mumble.  Better yet, set up an appointment for yourself and a couple buds, go in together and enjoy yourself by acting like a 5 year old.  Old Farts are expected to act childish, accommodate the kids running the show.  Complain they should provide coffee and Danish, preferably cheese Danish, after all you spent gas money to get there.

Do NOT fall into the GOLF trap.  It's nothing but an expensive way to ruin a nice walk on the pasture.  If it was fun oriented they wouldn't complain when you play it like polo slapping the ball as the cart drives by.

Congratulations Papaw!

I expect that, living in Texas, you will be coming up to Colorado soon?

If so, be sure to call, we'd love to see you and Mrs. Papaw.

Enjoy what you have earned, remember that for every grouchy old fart there is another that acts like Santa Claus - the one everyone calls Grandpa or one of it's variants (Papaw?)

Well done!

Regards,

Larry

You have it down pat, Aunt Phil!

Not any more Pawpaw.  Pat had some silly ideas including her planning a nationwide tour schedule that involved my motorhome and my fuel card.  Lets say Pat went down the road in her own Honda, and I didn't change the oil for her before she left.

These days it's Jan.

They threw a retirement luncheon for me today. Last day was Thursday morning.
Everyone at the home office came by along with some from other branches to enjoy some BBQ and talk over old times.
The two owners were there and that was an honor. They are millionaires, but act just like regular folks, just with better clothes and better vehicles.

No temptations at all. I did my time and left when I was ready and on my own terms.
I'll admit that I am struggling with all this extra time I have, and hope to get in a good rhythm soon.

If it is any help for you, I would be happy to make arrangements for you to come to Denver and help me organize my garage.  No charge.

You would be better than you think. My definition of organizing a garage is sitting around, looking at, playing with, talking about, and studying stuff. Tools, the projects we are working on - catalogs - the speed of ice melting in your pepsi, etc. Just no politics - except in the broadest and most inclusive way possible. No religion, except for genuine expressions of gratitude, concern for others welfare, and only any other part that would serve to foster understanding or tolerance and, maybe, answer a question.

After that, either going out to dig up something else to stuff in some garage hole, or, more likely, a nap.

When my kids were growing up they hated "Dad's favorite game"  because my favorite game was "clean the garage."

Now that I am older and, if not wiser, than, well, at least just older, I think that cleaning the garage is something for my heirs to worry about.  And I want to live another 40 years at least from my current 52.

Although usually an optimist, in the case of my garage at least, the place is half empty. And I feel it is my job, as an American, to fill it up.
