Title: A "what is it" farm tool
Post by: JoeCB on January 29, 2014, 08:22:53 PM
Not sure if this belongs here or on "Farm Tools", I'm guessing that this is some kind of planting implement. The tool incorporates a hand held upper end with a spring return plunger rod extending down ot the "digging" end. The lower end is a three fingered plug cutter, the plunger rod pushes thru the core cutter to eject the (earth ?) plug. Notice the "ear" projection, this to provide a push for ones foot. The tool is marked (cast iron) "PAT - Apld - For"  "JKI" on one side and "J-R-Kovar" on the back side. Well made tool, Cast iron, steel and nice wood handles. Any ideas?

Here is the patent. John R. Kovar seems to have been a prolific inventor

It looks like a tool used to pull weeds. Basically you just push it down an step on it. Then pull up. The weed with root attached comes out an your done. No need to bend down, at least in theory.

You're welcome to come over and try it at my house. I have more weeds than I do grass!
