Baxter Auction (Indianapolis) auction Feb 14, 2015

I'm sure I'd know a few collectors out there. Would cost me about $125 just in gas alone to go, would really like to know if I can actually plan on buying or if I'd just be a spectator. If I'm gonna spend that kind of money just to watch, I'd be better off saving it for a different sale.

 I have 20 on my list that I could use for my collection. Another dozen or so I really want to see up close. And the one I just want to actually handle once, if it is the real thing.

The issue I see is that he's had similar auctions every year the past few years, and some wrenches in this one look eerily similar to the ones in previous years, and they are pretty scarce wrenches. Looks a bit fishy. I'd really like somebody to speak up that has had interactions with that auctioneer out there. I know he sells for Donnelly, but he is only working for him then, not for himself.

BTW, if you think the paint is bad on this auction, look at some of his completed ones. Had a Casaday cutout a couple years back, god awful color paint on it. Wish I had the money that I could ruin a $1,000+ wrench.

I've been to Baxter's as well as to auctions he's called for Donnelly.   If there are repeats it was because the consignor had a reserve that was not met.  Or the last buyer is now a seller.

I asked -- Baxter is willing to handle absentee bids  (I guess you'd have to snip a photo & highlight an item to identify what you were interested in. )

I went, and was not just a spectator by any means. I got the lot with the STORTZ because it was cheap, plus a few hundred others. Probably the best, possibly second best to the Marseilles 13 wrench was this one.....

I did get it there. It had ugly green paint on it, but I got most of that off. That was the wrench that I had stated that you never see come up for sale. You do see a repop come up, but I wouldn't give $1 for one of those. This one is the real deal. It's a NY wrench that I honestly never gave much thought to owning, always figured if I even did see one, I wouldn't be able to compete as far as price goes. However, when it sells and they don't have a clue what they have, you can buy right.

As far as the trip....oh boy.... Look up reports about accidents on I-70 in Ohio on Saturday, I was on those roads at that time. It was a mess. What should have been a 10-11 hour trip took 16 hours. But I'd do it all over again when I can buy wrenches like the wolf trap wrench.

I have a box full of extra stuff that I will be listing on ebay as well. Probably 100-150 farm implement type wrenches in the box.

 I went back to the pictures of the box lots, way down the list was your wrench, yes, I can see
 why you took the paint off of it.

 as Stan stated about the want ad in the newsletter,  I remember seeing it many times and
 wondered why he never found one, now we know.

 that was worth the trip alone.

 your return trip home,  yes, I had seen that pileup on the internet, also one I think in Indiana,
 we had one here in Massachusetts on I- 95, but nothing like those two, glad you made it home
 safely.

Stan, if you want, I have the picture without the inserted lettering on it. If that would be better. As soon as I can convince the wife, I intend to make a shadowbox with the wrench and the copy of the catalog showing the wrench and have it proudly displayed in my living room. I talked her into one display, the Binghamton wagon one, but she's scoffing at having any more than that...lol

The problem I have is I have a fair amount of money tied up in the Binghamton wagon display, between the 2 wrenches and all the paperwork I've bought. I don't have a lot into the trap wrench, so it doesn't seem like a big deal to her.

BTW, I have to thank Dan Gaeier for that, he and I were the only ones that knew what that wrench was I think, and he seemed to only half heartily run me up a little on it, when he could have made me pay more. And not being a very nice person, what did I do, ran him up pretty high on a wrench neither of us had seen and both wanted. Sorry Dan, but I really would have liked the KY wagon mfg wrench too. He probably doesn't know that I did refrain from bidding on a couple he did end up with though, but they weren't as such big deal wrenches either.
