A couple more pictures.  The first is a short handled version (sold on eBay), identified as a Japanese tuna gaff.  The second a longer handled version that is identified as a "fishing gaff" and/or Japanese weapon. 

I think I have seen a Japanese painting with one of these as one of the weapons used -- that's the only place I can think of that I might have seen these before.
