Um, it's not my name for the boat; it's the Union Army designation, as used by General Haupt. Aside from the photographic evidence that they did indeed float -- men, timber, and even a 12 pound cannon with limber, the article called a blanket was a rubber "blanket" designed specifically for this use. For whatever reason the fellow in front wore it, it's still a regulation army stable frock. See attached 1866 photo (hand colored)
