LG's BIG craigslist score for 2/13/13: Gedore!!!
« on: February 15, 2013, 11:15:25 PM »
It was craigslist that paid off this time! :)

I love it when the seller fails to mention the brand of the old quality tools he's listing, as it means other would-be buyers are less likely to see the ad, giving ol' LG a better shot!

Such was the case on Wednesday when I spotted this:

http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/tls/3614409929.html

Of course, I recognized it was Gedore immediately, and was pretty sure it was a 3/4" or 1" drive set. I called the seller and asked what the drive-size was. He said it "looked like 3/4"" and then mentioned he had another, smaller set that was probably 1/2". I told him I'd take the larger one for certain and very probably the smaller one too. I was quite certain it's a Gedore 6280930 32 FMZ set with a breaker added since he told me the largest socket is 60mm!

Now East York is clear across Toronto from me, and I was (and still am) fighting a cold or allergies or the Plague. That wouldn't have kept me from driving in, but I figured I'd ring my buddy who often works in the area but lives here in the west suburbs to see if he could do a pickup. Sure enough, he happened to be about 5km away, so he headed over & grabbed the set for me. He called to report that the half-inch set was missing 6 sockets, the ratchet and at least one extension, so I passed on that for $25. But he asked if I would be interested in one of those "fold-out" tool boxes with some "wrenches and junk" included? I knew he meant a cantilever box as I already have a Gedore model, but another with Gedore wrenches included for $25 was a no-brainer, so he snatched that too for a total of $75!

I met my friend for beers last night & collected my loot. I spent an hour or two today cleaning the cantilever box & contents and will do the same to the socket set soon...

Let's start with the socket set:

It is a D 32 FMU-2 (6281230) Socket Set

  • With forged, tempered UD-profile sockets (no. D 32), hand-operated
  • With accessories made from GEDORE vanadium steel 31CrV3
  • Set U-2 with fine toothed, dial change ratchet
  • In GEDORIT blue sheet steel case
  • Dimensions: 555 x 230 x 80 mm

The set is supposed to include 22 mm, 24 mm, 27 mm, 30 mm, 32 mm, 36 mm, 38 mm, 41 mm, 46 mm, 50 mm, 55 mm & 60 mm sockets along with a Sliding T-bar, Extension (200mm), Extension (400mm) and a Reversible ratchet. My set is missing the 22mm socket (I have both a 22mm & a 24mm in 1/2"-drive) and the shorter extension. But it also includes a Proto breaker bar and Proto 1" socket!

Next is the cantilever box itself. It isn't actually marked, and I initially thought it was a Gedore box, but I now believe it is a Hazet 190L.

Oddly, both boxes show many battle scars (though both work just fine) but the tools themselves are in much better condition. I suspect that may be because they were stored in less-than-ideal conditions over years.

Here's what was in the box!

First - a collection of Gedore No. 7 combination wrenches. 6, 7, 8, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 & 24mm sizes.

Then a near-complete set of No. 6 DOEs from 26mm down to 6mm and a pair of No. 400 flare-nut wrenches in 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, & 14mm sizes!

This was followed by an assortment of Teutonic goodness including a Gedore 197-1 Swedish-pattern pipe wrench, Knipex 11-01-160 end-type wire-strippers, Weidmüller stripax® wire-strippers, a cool pick tool that disassembles into 3 pieces, 4 Wiha 334-Series T-handle hex keys and a half-round #2 file & a half-round cabinet rasp both by Friedrich Dick. There was also a French-made Muller 25mm cold chisel & a Swedish-made Sandvik hacksaw blade.

Then there was an incomplete set of LARGE metric German-made hex keys. The largest key is 18mm...

Finally, there were 3 other wire-strippers that will go to friends or back on kijiji. Two are crappy no-name stamped jobs, but there is also a very nice vintage Speedex stripper made in Rockford, Illinois that I would be keeping if I didn't already have some Ideal Stripmasters...

There were a few other things not worth photographing including a tap and handle of no apparent noteworthiness, a few odd wrenches, hex keys, zip ties, and so on.

I figure the new retail on this stuff must be ~$2000.

LG is happy.

Very nice fine, I would say you did good!
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

The name Gedore was familiar, but I didn't know about the company. Here is what I found. The list at the bottom has possibilities too. Great score LG. Do you use 3/4" drive tools?

I don't. But it's nice to know that I can!

The name Gedore was familiar, but I didn't know about the company.

Yes, and what that wiki doesn't mention is that when Willi left the firm (due to a disagreement with Otto) he founded another German tool company in the family name - Dowidat-Werke Willi Dowidat - which is why you might also encounter stuff like this:

And if you recall, I recently acquired a nice, German Iltis OCHSENKOPF Large Felling Axe.

The OCHSENKOPF axe (that is, "Ox-Head") is a well-known and highly-regarded brand made in Remscheid since 1781. Today, Iltis OCHSENKOPF is actually owned by Dako Werk Dowidat GmbH & Co.; that is, Gedore!

Help me out fellas, most of the Gedore I find at pawn shop"gray tubs", is made in India or some other oddball country.  Didn't realize that was originally a German  entity.  I have acquired some Dowidat wrenches from Germany, but no Gedores.  I'll keep looking tfrom this point forward....  Excellent finds, BTW

From what I have seen of Gedore, it's crap. I guess at one time, it was good stuff. Kinda like what has happened to some U.S. tool companies - if they didn't disappear altogether.

Gedore has always been very good; or at least the German stuff has always been top notch. It is generally not considered at quite the level of the two big dogs in Deutschland - Stahlwille and Hazet - but it is certainly highly-regarded.

What you have both experienced is the truly awful Indian production that was common where I lived in the 1970s and 1980s. That stuff was probably the very worst I've ever seen & production ceased in the early 1980s.

We discussed them here in the past: http://www.papawswrench.com/vboard/index.php?topic=2955.0

I recently bought a lot that included some large Gedore combo wrenches that were South African production. I sold them again as they were sizes I already had covered, but the quality looked very good...
