shipping
« on: January 10, 2013, 04:16:16 AM »
I wanted to ship a 8 inch doe wrench, made a cardboard box just the right size, taped it up and took it to the post office to ship. The nice lady weighed the box and said 8 dollars and seventy four cents.I looked at her and asked her if there was a mistake and she said no, I took the box over to the corner picked a small flat rate box assembled took a role of tape that was on the counter and taped the corners. I addressed the box and shipped it for 6 dollars and 58 cents.  If I had gone 4 miles up the road to a usps substation it would have cost 5 dollars and eighty five cents.
WHAT THE HAY is going on here.I remember the small flat rate box was 5 dollars . If you bought it online it was 4 dollars and 85 cents I don;t mind paying the price but all post offices should charge the same and a discount through the computer  bob w.

$6.85 doesn't sound right either, Bob.

The smallest box should've been about $5.35.

The homemade box cannot ship "Flat Rate". It might have also been heavier than the PO boxes.

There are 2 Priority Maill boxes that are the same size, one is the small flat rate box. You might have grabbed the box that ships by weight. Delivery confirmation costs extra.

Apparently USPS has boxes with different dimensions available on line that they don't carry in the post offices.  There's a couple of them that handle semi- long tools pretty well.....and I'm getting ready to find out first hand...lol

I used to think shipping charges were a ripoff these days, but when I think about how little distance I can travel for $8 in gas, I quit whining.....

Don't forget the flat rate envelopes.  Most people don't realize you can ship any weight in these also.  I have shipped double bit axe heads in them.  You have to tape them up real good so they don't come apart.  And make sure to cover the edges.  I've shipped chisels and wrenches this way also.  They can get kind of "ugly" looking but who cares.

Did you buy any extra services like delivery confirmation? They sell rolls of tape, maybe they charged for tape from the counter.
