stanley #10 plane (parts)
« on: November 04, 2012, 06:22:37 PM »
I couldn't let this one continue to rot away.  I should be able to salvage the blade, chip breaker, lever cap and maybe knob(cracked, but its small).  I don't have a #10, so I am really going about this backwards...I have parts, but no plane!!!

You and everyone else ;P

Normally the flea is filled with dead plane bodies that have been stripped of parts to patch up better bodies, and having parts and needing a body would be a piece of cake...

But you have the 'special' child....
The body that splits in half leaving good parts behind.....

Happy hunting ;P

That plane does look a little rough ;-)   But more parts for the collection and one of these days you'll find a decent #10.

Um, you got a plane; it's just that the body has been repaired.  Clean it up a bit and try it out.  Bet it works.  That's what I'd do.  Sure, the collector value is way down, but I suspect the user value is still there.  (At least you have a blade with life in it -- the blade in mine has something like 1/8 of an inch of usable blade left.)

Poor thing took a hard fall!
Are both sides cracked or just the repaired one?
Lateral adjusters are unnecessary and serve as impact absorbers. :)
So if the body will hold straight in use you can use this plane just fine until another body comes along.
You won't be able to slide it down a batten or trim a deep rabbet if you are rt handed, but learning to use your off side is really good practice, and it'll do just fine left handed.

PS  really interesting about the stripped bodies at the swap meet Rusty. The whole psychology of it totally escapes me.  A whole perfectly good plane sells for $20 and hardly any takers at that price.
A decent tote sells for 25 or more, and they beat the door down to get it?? They'll pay $15 for a blade!

I keep wondering when the perfectly good tool is going to be worth something?
I have 2 "extra" tools in storage. A 4 and a 5.  Both are early sweetheart era. Both are near mint with close enough to 100% japanning, no rust, full blades etc etc. Both still have the stickers on the tote.

No way I am selling them for their current value, no way in the world.  These are some of the best tools ever made by man. Someday they will be worth actual money.

This plane hit the ground hard.  Both sides of the body are broke, only one side is repaired.  Not only is the lateral adjuster gone, the top of the frog is also missing!  This is in no way even a user plane.

It doesn't look -that- bad.

The frog is an easy fix. Grab a frog from a #3...there's probably one in your parts box (you've been buying cheap parts planes, right?)

And weld the sides. What do you have to lose? It's no value to a collector at this point and you don't have another #10...so fix it.

>good plane sells for $20 and hardly any takers at that price. ; A decent tote sells for 25

It is the logic of the hole.

How deep are you in the hole?

Like, when you borrow money to buy a house. Then you discover you need to fix it, so you borrow more money to fix it. You have to , because if you don't fix it, it's not worth what you borrowed. But now you owe more than it's worth fixed....
Either way, yer stuck in the hole.....

The bodies at the flea have no takers, ever. I suppose the sellers are desperately subscribing to the bigger fool theory....
