Its a nice looking saw, but you'd work more than a horse cutting rafter tails all morning with that.  Makes my arm hurt to look at it.

This saw is semi retired, It is a shop queen now. The weight is not as bad as you would think, around what a more modern Skil HD77 weights .  I usually use my Hilti WSC 7.25-A 36 V cordless saw for rafter tails, unless it is a larger project, then I would use my corded Milwaukee saw.

I wonder if anyone could provide any production dates as to each and every type number for the 77?

And here's what I know of them so far:
Type 15 was issued at some point in the late 1970s; is the last 77 to use the black and red label which I believe had made its debut with Type 14. (NOTE: The attachment I included in this reply shows this particular version of the label.)

Type 16 was manufactured starting in December 1985 and has the black and silver label reading "SKILSAW PROFESSIONAL" on the black part of the label, with the tool specs on the silver portion.

Type 16A was an incremental revision of the above, from circa 1987.

Type 17 was issued in 1993, after Skil and Bosch merged (forming S-B Power Tool Co.); Bosch would acquire Skil in full three years later. It was also this time when Skil's heavy-duty and super-duty power tools would be given the new "SKIL HD" or "SKILSAW HD" label.

Your 77 appears to date from the 1940s-early 1950s for it is still all-metal and the modernized SKIL and SKILSAW logos weren't used yet.

Despite not doing much carpentry work anymore, I have always wanted a worm drive skill saw. The near $200 price tag always turned me off. Well a guy had a NIB one on CL for $100. Last evening he delivered it.
I assume my son will be building his first house with it.

I havce 3 of the 77's , but now I am curious as to which one is the oldest.  One is missing it's trigger switch, but I only paiud a dollar for it, My worker really saws through wood and I got it for $25 with a new Diablo blade on it and a 20' 12 ga. replacement cord.  The third one came with its origiinal metal box, but it's pretty rusty.  It runs just fine, but until I wear out the $25 one, it may get to hibernate another decade or two.  Will be pricing the new trigger switch rather trhan turn the $1 bargain into a parts saw......

Would you please post pictures of your 77 trio, that way I can find out which of the three is the oldest? Reading the nameplates on all of them would also help. 1979 and later models (approx. production start: November 1978) should have the date code embossed on the nameplate.

The one in the metal case is actually an older 825 from maybe the 40's??  Not sure where I'll get 8 1/4" blades for it...cheap anyway.  I'm thinking both of the 77's are pre 1978, but I'll let the gurus fill me in on that info.
