My Small Wood Handled Pipe Wrench

Here is a small 6" Stillson wrench. Has a wood covered handle, must be spit because of the tape job.   Says it's made by the WALWORTH MFG. CO. Boston USA  There is something in the little arrow on the Movable jaw but I can't make it out.  On the other side it says Stillson on both the handle and moving jaw.

 I have seen your shop. Get to work!!
That handle has got to go!! Originals were beech I believe, but maple, rosewood,..... I kind of like bocote.

 The hook jaw is "sprung" too. Bent backwards in abuse, as many were.
I use a large vise and 3 bolts or something to press them back out.  Press further than you need to go because of spring back when the pressure is released. You'll see.

 Oh my favorite size of pipe wrench. Little real use in the world, but I don't care.

I've got one of those, too; lives in my mechanic's toolbox, where it was once very useful for the various pipe fitments on my old Studebaker truck and other vehicles that used pipe fittings.

Just a reminder of those times now - modern cars don't stoop to pipe fittings.

a coincidence , I picked one up at the market Wedneday. Looked it over and laid it back down. The next guy bought it. Neat wrench.

I am gonna warn you about those little pipe wrenches, nothing but trouble, cause one is not enough.
I bought one home today, cleaned up it turned out to be  5 1/2" German made, but I kept him anyway!

well, that'll be good if you ever encounter any machinery with German pipe on it.

Although "German pipe" immediately brings up images like this in my head...

The arrow mark in the hook jaw was a trade mark WALWORTH used at the time -- it may have a size  indication in there as well.
