Help Needed - Identifying Wrenches
« on: July 05, 2012, 04:35:35 PM »
I have a few wrenches I'm trying to identify. I believe they're mostly from old tool kits or implement wrenches...

1) This one is weird. It measures 6.75". The number 28 is stamped on one side, the other side lists the sizes incorrectly as 5/16 and 7/16, when they are a much larger 5/8 and 13/16.

2) This one is smaller. It might be recognizable to someone familiar with its unique handle. Does it serve a purpose?

3) This wrench simply has the number "43845", and measures 5.5".

4) This is stamped "H-2". It's seen better days but the sizing is still legible. It measures just over 7".

5) These two wrenches have the letter "M". However, one of them could be a "W"... The larger wrench also has the number "25".

6) These three are unmarked. The longest measures 6". They're fairly sturdy for their size.

7) The last wrench is itty bitty. The spark plugs it's for must be pretty small...

I'm guessing the last picture is magneto wrenches.

The sizes on #1 would be early sizing matching the diameter of the shaft of the fastener, not the head.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wrench sizes were commonly named by the nominal size of the bolts whose nuts they fit, rather than the size (across the flats) of the nuts themselves. For example, a "1/2" opening might fit a 7/8 (across the flats) nut threaded on a 1/2 inch bolt.

Yes the last ones are magneto and point system tools.

Thanks for the input.

Papaw, That link completely explains the numbering, and "weird" sizing, on some of these wrenches... Thank you!

The tappet wrench is herbrand.  The fifth photo with the wrench with the M is Moore drop forge, possibly from a ford tool kit.  The last wrench looks like a version of the bosch delco ignition wrench.

Thanks,
Kirk

The last wrench is indeed stamped "AB" on the back, for American Bosch Magneto Corp.

Thanks for the help. Just curious what I had.

Just as an aside, some old spark plugs had a nut on the top to hold the wire rather than the push on type wire connectors used today. The small end of a spark plug wrench would fit the nut....
