Who showed us this tool?
« on: May 02, 2011, 05:10:19 AM »
This was in our What's-Its, but I don't remember who showed it or if we determined what it is.

I think Bus said it was a patented hub nut wrench, I'll see if I can find the patent. The inner section grabs the nut and the outer section aligns on the outside of the hub.

I think it is patent number 206,721 patented August 6, 1878 by J. S. Gifford. It might have been Stan that identified it. I don't remember if it was Bus or Stan.

I found the cached original post with a Google search at
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:_2oG4UEIzMYJ:www.papawswrench.com/vboard/showthread.php%3Ft%3D7850+tool+talk+206,721&cd=8&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a&source=www.google.com

I suppose most of the old posts can be found in Google's cache. I wonder how long they will
be available? The wayback machine also has the old pages cached but they are two years
behind posting them. If I had enough space on my server I could host the original posts there
but I don't.

The patent for the wrench is on DATAMP at:
http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?number=206721&typeCode=0

Here's a text only version of the first page of the forum. I couldn't find the second page.

Very strange looking tool! What does it look like when it is in the open
      position?
It appears to be a locking ratchet type clamping tool. Any marks on it at
      all?
Are the inner Jaws both concave, as they appear, but are hard to see in
the picture? How long is it? I'm trying to envision it working on a chain
link, or barbed wire fence, but cannot see it yet.

Really cool item.Looks like as you squeeze the handles the center closes
to grip something and the outer jaws spread to expand something. The outer
jaw length looks to be adjustable. Not a clue what it is

Maybe it grabs a joint of pipe by binding inside and outside? Looks to me
like the inside jaws spread outward and the outside jaws close
      inward.__________________

      Welcome to Tool Talk, Pat!
      Stan Schulz found the patent-
It is an axle nut wrench! Applied: Jun. 20, 1878
      Granted: Aug. 06, 1878
Quote:This is one of those axle nut wrenches that clamps the nut to
the wheel, so they can be turned off and back on to the axle as a
unit. The center pieces clamp on the axle nut. The outer pieces are
then clamped against the inner rim of the wheel hub.

Bus, I am aware of the searches on Google. Those are good for copying old posta and I have used some. Too bad they don't have the needed files for the forum code so I could have used them in rebuilding.

Were you able to pull those pictures from the "Cached" file?

Google cache files usually expire 15 days from the time they were last spidered, they will vanish soon : (

I have about 130 threads (single page)  I managed to find, I wonder if it would make sense to make a small collection outside of the forum space? They aren't very large, (8M total) as the pictures in many of them (the only ones with working pictures) are linked offsite to imageshack etc...

There doesn't seem to be any way to put them back into the forum, but as stand alone web pages they work ok, and we could link to them

If you are interested papaw, I can try to clue them together into some kind of web archive....

[Yeah,130/5000 isn't great....but...sigh]
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Does this new board have a backup in case something happens again?

Do that if you have time Rusty.

Yes, Bus, there are backups.
