Pageant of Steam, Canandaigua, NY - Flea Market visit
« on: August 14, 2022, 08:39:30 PM »
This yearly event is must-see, if not for the flea market or the hundreds of old tractors, then for the people watching and crazy motorized contraptions people use to get around the grounds.  I should have spent more time looking around but after perusing the flea, I was sorta worn out.  And the small bag of tools I had picked up was getting heavier by the minute.  Oh, I spent $24 and had 25 items.
Only $1500 for this '67 Triumph 650 - original "period custom".  I had one of those custom seats on my Bonneville back in the 70's - I wish I had kept the seat, but at least I still have the bike.

Westcraft pliers - Western Auto, Stanley 1299 knife, Champion gauge; next row - Wm. Hjorth & Co. pliers 1903 patent, McKaig-Hatch 8" pliers; next row - Carll adjustable/reversible wrench/pipe wrench 1913 patent, McKaig- Hatch "tool kit" pliers with screwdriver blade handle: next row - Lufkin gages, Proto driver and Sargent wire cutters.

6 Williams Superrenches,  left side - wrench with round mark and number 13 - anyone know what this is?, wrench with triangular mark and hard to read numbers , maybe 864-043 what is this?,  lock ring tool stamped "1rn6ATas",  small McKaig-Hatch, Davis & Furber Machine Co. 76M,  tiny Blue Point 3/8 x 7/16; next row - below the Superrenches - Plomb 3/8 and 5/8 in same style and a 7/8 Plomb Pebble.

After clean up - the rusty Sargent wire cutter freed up and has only the slightest wear.
The Hjorth pliers were able to be disassembled and cleaned - these things are weird, I don't know what to make of these yet, and there is a removable jaw that possibly could be reversed.
The 8" McKaig plier is going in my tool box to replace a more worn 8" plier.  They cleaned up well and the chrome is near perfect.
I like that the Hjorth pliers and the Carll wrench were not used much as a hammer!  Sometimes, heavy tools, well, you know!

For me this would be a terrific find, a once in 5 years find.  Wrenches I see, and bring home, but the McCaig Hatch seldom turn up out here.  The Hjorth, never seen before,  very unusual.  Great finds here.

Nice finds, Al. I’ve run across a couple of Carll wrenches in my travels.

Addison B. Carll had a thing for switching the jaws around on his wrench patents, he is the same guy that patented the Little Giant pipe wrenches that you can switch the moveable jaw around to different positions.

John, I have a few M-H wrenches, but only in 3  sizes.  Some are plated with a gold tone, some plain black steel.  I see MH marked pliers sometimes but only buy them if they have the screwdriver handle (and must be in good shape).  I have not yet tried to sell any MH stuff but hope they have some resale value.

Don,  The 6" version looks neat.  What are the letters after A.B.C. Wrench...?  This one is stamped only with Carll on one side and patent date on other side.

Lewill, This is the only reversible I've come across.  I have seen the Little Giant online only.  I paid only two bucks for this wrench and two for the Hjorth pliers.

Has anyone found the Hjorth pliers to be useful?  They are so weird.  I thought I would resell them but maybe I'll see if they have some shop value first.  Why would it have a reversible jaw? Or is it only meant to be replaceable?  I took the jaw and tried turning it around but it did not fit back in place when reversed.  They cleaned up well.  Had to apply just a little propane heat to loosen the jaw screw.

Al,
I listed some McKaig hatch tools on eBay a while back but my results were kind of disappointing. They eventually sold but didn’t generate many bids. Some McKaig hatch tools are pictured below along with some more Carll wrench pictures.

Amecks, the Hjorth pliers probably have a removable jaw because the jaw insert is hardened. Probably not meant to be reversed. Possibly they had different inserts too.
