...because I've been busy using the tools I already have. Last month I bought this - a 1959 Indian Chief (built by Royal Enfield). Last on the road in 1986. Picked it up pretty cheap on Craigslist.
Some of you may remember I am into British motorcycles. When Indian Motorcycles went out of business in 1953 they still had a nationwide dealer network - with no motorcycles to sell. Royal Enfield motorcycles were brought in to fill the gap. Then for a short time, 1958 to 1961, Royal Enfield made special models badged as Indians.
Some true Indian owners look down on the rebadged Enfields. That's OK. I am just appreciating this bike for what it is, not pretending it is something special. It is a piece of history, but this was a well made motorcycle with a 700cc vertical twin engine. There are some unique parts that are hard to find, but many parts are in common with the 700-750cc twins that were made til the 70's and the Enfield Bullets made today in India. Hitchcock's in England has a wide range of new and even used parts available. Most of the missing parts have been found.
My plan for now is just to make it run (and get it titled in my name). My neighbor has a horse training track in his back yard and said I could go around the track when I get it going.
I am getting itchy to make a run to the Tool Thriftshop and Tom's Bargain Stop.
