Craftsman Wavy Oval Logo ??
« on: July 06, 2021, 07:51:06 PM »
Does anyone know when these were made. I really don't think these were from the early Craftsman days. Were these a promotion or reproduction or what ever. I also have a wood plane with the same logo. The square is 16" with no increment markings on the 2-1/2" wide blade. Any insight is appreciated.

About 1990, saw a Sears display of traditional woodworking tools, thought about it,  never bought any.  Think this part of the set.

It may well be part of that set of reproduction tools.

The logo in question is the first Craftsman logo.  Somewhere I've got links to the years that various logos ran; this was replaced, I think, after just a few years.  Too bad; it's the prettiest of all of their logos.

Thank you for all your help.  After all the searching nobody narrowed it down. Thanks again.

That logo is similar in style to their 1928 logo. I believe the "style" has been used on later tools. The photo of the square has a similar shape, and I believe this tool was offered in 1994.

The later set has plain brass rivets, and the tool you have has an earlier style rivet pattern with decorative brass infill.  I would say yours may be an original logo tool.

I believe that the wavy logo was first used when Sears bought Craftsman Tool Company in 1927.  They used it until around 1932.  It was replaced by the underlined C. That one lasted until just after WW2. I don’t think that they had a hard change date. Vendors used up existing stock.
