Adjustable Pipe Wrench Find
« on: March 14, 2020, 12:49:06 AM »
I was lucky enough to find this pipe wrench in an old box of tools in a s/h shop while on holidays in Tasmania. The markings on it are " MATHIESON  GLASGOW No.1  1/4-1".  While looking at the wrenches on offer in the Spring Wrenching News Auction, Item 171 looks to be a very similar wrench, Patented on June 15, 1875 to a Charles Fenton of New York,NY.  US Pat No. 164,368. On the DATAMP site for this patent number it notes that a known example of this wrench is marked "T. CHATWIN PATENT". The hunt continues to try and find additional information on this wrench.

Tasmania!  You lucky devil!

BTW, you didn't happen to run into Tom Hanks while you were there (Australia), did you?

[ https://books.google.com/books?id=iiM9AQAAIAAJ } is catalogue of an 1880 exhibition at Melbourne.  Mathieson is no. 679 - pg. 310 -  in the list  (Alexander Mathieson & Son / Glasgow ).  The listing says they were well known supplier to colonial markets.  The listing does not include any illustrations.    The company gets only passing notice in Geesin's THE ADJUSTABLE SPANNER.  { https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Mathieson_%26_Sons } is the wikipedia article for the firm.

Thank you for all the replies, I have been able to turn up some additional information (thanks to Mr Google) on Mathieson Pipe Wrench and Pipe Cutters from their 1899 Illustrated Price list, Courtesy of the "Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, Sydney Living Museum" only to the realize that I already had 3 of their pipe cutters in my collection (in a box that had not been opened for a long time).  There is one picture of a good quality Mathieson made Wrench in a Glasgow museum - https://www.reddit.com/r/Tools/comments/9z8bok/alexe_mathieson_sons_glasgow_adjustable_wrench_at/. Cheers Danks

Thank you.  In the absence of a spring meeting of the Missouri Valley Wrench Club, I'm scrambling to find content for newsletters.  This Mathieson info will be useful for that.
