Craigslist freebe. 10 inch Craftsman table saw.
« on: October 29, 2019, 10:03:27 PM »
I was searching the Craigslist free section and found a 10 inch Craftsman table saw for free. I went and picked it this evening. The man who gave it to me said his father bought in the 1980's. He said his father recently gave it to him and he has no use for it. It is model number 113.298150. and was made by the Emerson Electric Co. It has a cast iron table with one stamped steel table extension. It has the fence and miter gauge. It has two blade inserts that fit in the center of the table. It also has the anti kickback device. The motor is a double shaft type and the saw in mounted on a Sears metal base. Other than mild rust on the table, the unit shows little use. It also has a plastic belt guard and two small wheels on two of the legs to make it easier to move around. Now real is the real weird thing. I got home and checked Craigslist to see if the man had taken the ad down and it was gone, but another saw just like the one I just picked up was list for free in the for sale section and only a couple of blocks from the one I just picked up. looks just like my new one, but has two table extensions. I would go get it, but now I have 6 table saws in my garage. Sorry I can't do pictures. My picture person was over today, but had to leave before I got the saw. These old C-man saws are well built. Far better than the junk the big box stores sell nowadays.

On a trip to the ReStore about a year ago, I drove through the back yard before going in. There was a BIG table saw sitting next to the scrap dumpster. I got out and looked. It was a pre war Craftsman 10 inch with a 2 HP motor.   When I asked about it inside, I was told that if t was near the dumpster, it was $5. I slapped leather! When I got it home and did some research, I found that it was a 1938 saw and the first year for the tilting blade arbor. All before had been tilt table types. I did not need another saw, so I use it as a workbench in the middle of the shop. I did test the motor. It ran. It took. A minute or two to get up to speed and blew about a pound of saw dust out while it was speeding up. I don’t plan to use it, but it is very cool to have it. The only thing missing was the sliding cross cut guide. Two weeks later I found the correct underlined Craftsman at another ReStore for $2.

I can't believe the amount of free table saws that show up on Craigslist, That second one I found last night was gone in 15 minutes. I have a second 10 inch model that I found around the corner from my house about two years ago. It has a cast iron table also and one cast iron extension. The other one was gone already. My smallest C-man saw has a cast iron table that is appox 16 inches long and about 12 inches wide. It has a tilting table and uses a eight inch blade. My other three C-man table saws are larger, but use eight inch blades also. I was lucky when I got one of them because it came with about a dozen extra blades of which half of them are new. Around here if you want eight inch blades you have to order them online because none of the stores carry them. I am going to put a cutoff wheel on one and use it to cut metal. I saw my neighbor do it years ago. He removed the fence and added a second miter gauge. He would clamp what he was cutting to the miter gauges and did his cutting under his car port so not to ad more grit and dust to his shop. I have a C-man band saw I want to convert to a metal cutting saw, but I need to slow the blade way down. I have been watching a lot of YouTube videos on how to do it.

After WW2, when Grandpa got out of the service, one of the things on his bucket list was to have a basement workshop. Sears, Delta and others worked hard to develop him as a new market for power tools. Gramps had a pretty good job and he worked hard at it. When he could afford it, a table saw was pretty high on his list. Today, most young people want nothing to do with Grandpas tools. When they inherit them, the most important thing is to get rid of them. Supply and demand. There are more old table saws than there are customers for them It is a shame that new furniture is so cheap. Why make it when you can have new for peanuts.
