These were in a box lot and appear to be one-offs.  They are solid brass and the top one weights 3.5 pounds.  Anyone have any ideas on why someone would make such saws?

Hello Coolford. Nice find on those!! Answer to your question; "Because they can"  Nice way to show off metal working skills. Regards, Lou

Never seen a brass hack saw, but both of those are fantastic.

Those are nice, real nice.
Id love to see a close up of the bottom one, looks like an intricate design.

Very remarkable saws!  No identifying marks?  Just someone decided they could make their own?

Somebody was showing off....and I'm envious!

Nice pair of saws.

No identifying marks on either saw.  Here is a close up of the design---It is not crisp, but it is on both sides of the saw.  The other saw is entirely smooth and a little rougher.

Thanks for the close up picture. I would think that the saw frame was made by pouring molten brass into a mould. But why would a person only make one ?  Maybe there are more out there in the wild ?

The surface decoration on the top saw may be non-existent, but that handle!

The rest of the box lot had no relation to the saws, mainly 50's Craftsman stuff.
