Massive Crane on Campus
« on: August 28, 2019, 05:54:46 PM »
Hello, Guys. The students are back, and my work load should be winding down. The major construction projects continue, and I wanted  to share what is going on at our sports / concert stadium. They are replacing the pressurized fabric roof with a hard roof. All of the work is being done above the existing roof, so a large crane had to be brought in. I have included a link showing the crane being used, the Liehberr 11000, one of the largest crawler cranes in the world. A pit was dug, re-enforcement piles driven around the perimeter, and 8 feet of gravel was compacted to create the bed. Massive timbers (crane pads), and the crane was assembled onsite. It took 80 flatbed trucks to build the crane. It took a large crane to build this crane!!! It is hard to grasp the size of this crane, it  has a lifting capacity of 1100 TONS!!! I have photos from nearby, but I haven't figured out how to downsize them from my phone. They are bringing in a second, smaller crane, for the other side, with a lifting capacity of only 850 TONS!! Okay, I am a crane/construction nerd!!!      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjPD0xdThqM   Regards, Lou

That is one MASSIVE crane! I've seen a few moble cranes with capacities in the 100-something tons; also Liebherrs; but were wheeled units. And 80! trucks to hold all the parts? Most cranes I've seen just had one or two trucks, as well as a service truck with the crane company.

Hello, Cody. A good amount of the 80 trucks carried the counterweights. Each plate weighed 10 Tons, and there were only 2 plates per flatbed truck, 1 over each axle!!! Regards, Lou

I can see 80 truckloads to move that guy. Years back when I retired our biggest crane was a 165 ton Lorain on rubber. and it took 12 trucks to move it. Counterweights take up a lot of trucks and so does a lattice style boom. The boom on our 165 was a little over 6' square and was in 20' lengths, we could ship 40' on one truck and some the of Jib boom on top of it or some crane pads or whatever we could fit on the load. The booms are fairly light but do take up a lot of room. Depending on how far we moved it we would sometimes drive the carrier but the house had to come off for the move. I have rented bigger cranes for some jobs but I think a 600 ton Liebherr was the biggest I ever worked around.
I was visiting some friends in Los Vegas last winter and there is a big Liebherr working on the new Raiders stadium. Not sure of the tonnage but my buddy thought it had a 1000 ton capacity, and being a German machine that may have been metric tonnes. The Liebherrs I have worked around are, in my opinion, very good machines.
