Collection Ideas/Feedback Requested
« on: January 31, 2019, 07:33:36 PM »
After viewing all of the great tool sets posted recently I'm inspired to collect a set.  The issue is deciding which company,  set, and what year. I've decided to start looking at the year 1962, but I may move to a different year if I can't find a set I like.

I'm hoping to get some opinions, ideas, feedback,  from my highly esteemed colleagues on this forum.  Here's the direction I'm heading.  A wrench/ratchet/socket set in a catalog in 1962.  It doesn't have to be a set only made in that year. Interesting styling or iconic styling is a plus. Affordable and accessible  is also a plus. Once committed I'm fine with taking a long time to put the set together. The journey is part of the fun.
You might say I have a tool collecting problem....

If you want to have a wood box you will have to go much earlier.

I would suggest S K Wayne for that time period.

Barcalo made some attractive combination wrenches in that time period.  See Figures 55 through 60.

I like both of these suggestions. I like the SK Wayne- Lectrolite wrenches from that time, I've always liked the Barcalo because of their connection to theBarcalounger.

I don't collect P&C brand tools, but I have over 400 items. They were made less than a half hour away from me and there is many around for give away prices. How about Wizard / Western Auto tools ? I have always liked New Britain and Blackhawk brand tools. One of my favorite brands is Proto. Millions of Craftsman tools out there and related power tools.

Made by Duro-Indestro, Montgomery Wards sold Wards Riverside, Master Quality and Powr-Kraft.  Some other brands of Duro's look interesting as well.
(edit)  Here's an idea...buy one of the tool boards Jabberwoki is selling in our classifieds and fill it in.  Many of the boards have no tools or one or two items only.

Yadda, do you get "The Fine Tool Journal"? They had an article a while back on Barcalo and Barcalounger. One of the Gaier family wrote it.

I don't know anything about their age, but I got part of a set of Thorsen DOE wrenchs in a box lot. If you want to finish this set, I would be happy to send them to you Yadda.
VWs to D10s, I've fixed em.
