Lakeland NY Craigslist tools
« on: May 30, 2018, 09:03:39 PM »
I answered an ad for a tool lot and went there after lunch on Memorial Day.  A woman was helping clear out the estate of her daughter's late husband.  She said many of the tools had belonged to the guy's father, who was an engineer and sold products to a major car manufacturer.  I came home with 5 or 6 boxes.  Some of it is unusual and I will post it here as I sort it out.  Other tools are OK users and there's some lower quality asian stuff.

Stamped NYCS (New York Central System), you can just make out "Billings" and it is marked 370B and has the size marks on the other side 1 and 1-1/8 inch.

Lou will like this hex key holder marked "PHOENIX GAGE CO. PHOENIX, N.Y. PAT PEND." The blade that latches has dimensional marks and the letters S and C.  The marks appear to relate to the size of the screw thread.  The S marks are 4 thru 3/4 and the C marks are 4 thru 1/2.  The latch blade functions well and locks in place.

Starrett auto center punch - I have smaller autos but no Starretts.  Two nice small Snappys. The OEX100 will match my set.  The pliers have no markings other than the Vacuum Grip pattern and a date code? inside the handle.  Very nice condition, very small and light.
More to come.

Very nice finds. Just how big is that automatic center punch ? I have 2 that are 5 inches long. One is marked GENERAL HARDWARE NYC and the other is marked CRAFTSMAN. They appear to have been made by the same mfg. I have owned them for over 40 years. Yours looks to be bigger ?

Looks like his picture is taken with a cutting mat as the background which would make the squares a 1 inch grid. Starrett made at least 2 sizes of the automatic center punch.

After checking a 1938 catalog they made 3 sizes, #18AA, 3 1/4" x 3/8" diameter, #18A, 5" x 1/2" diameter and #18B, 6" x 3/4" diameter. All lengths are measured when the adjustment is mid point.

I just took the punch back to the garage.  I'm guessing it must be the 5" x 1/2".  I have two sorta modern Snap-On pencil size pocket auto punches (one home and one at work).  The Starrett definitely hits harder.  I get to use this spare cutting mat as a background thanks to my gracious wife, the quilter.

That's why I have my own mat, the edges are curled up a little making it hard to use for a cutting mat but the wrenches don't mind a bit.
