Stanley 1220 Hand Drill
« on: January 21, 2018, 02:07:10 PM »
Hello, I went back to the local antique show, and a vendor had a Stanley No. 1220 Hand Drill, (eggbeater style) Made in USA . Solid gear, 3-jaw chuck. What was unusual was the weight of it, very heavy for its size, solid ball end handle. This had either an extremely high polish, or was chrome plated? Vendor told me it was a Medical drill, I had never seen or heard of one by Stanley. I could not find a 1220 in John Walter's book, either. I didn't buy it, and I failed to take a photo. Any one have thoughts on this tool? Thanks, Lou

I am not an expert, but I would think that if it was for medical use, it would be stainless steel, if you go back again, put a magnet to it.

also the weight, would doctors be using a heavy drill ??

Lou, just using my 2 cent reply.

Hello, Frank. Thanks for the reply, I didn't believe that it was a medical drill, and the only marking was on the flat area of the crank handle. It has moved on from here, but I have the vendor's card, I will try to get a photo.I am sure it didn't sell, at least not at the price he gave me. Regards, Lou

Some types of stainless steel are magnetic. Having worked in the scrap metal business, I use to carry a magnet to properly sort the different types.
