Found in an old cabinet - no tools, but....
« on: January 16, 2018, 09:19:24 AM »
This cabinet had some rust issues and I needed to rearrange the shelves, and it got a quicky paint job with dollar store paint (actually good paint - the same as Tractor Supply sells).  There was at one time a drawer and side panels that kept it in place.  Behind the side panels I found several quite old tool related items.

The original label survived the sanding process so I preserved it.

Left to right:  A machine screw and fractional size tap selector with sliding insert by Threadwell Tap & Die with the local distributor Production Tool & Gage Co.  No records on the internet for this company.  The Syr Kemper Building is now just the Syracuse Building.  Note the 5 digit phone number.  Near as I can tell, 5 digit phone numbers ended in the late 40's or early 50's in the Syracuse area.
Sterling grinding Wheel Co. paper "washers" - unused - apparently provided for mounting grinding wheels.  There were 3 smaller Norton paper washers.  The other Sterling paper sheet has wheel specs and "The Sterling Grinding Wheel Division of the Cleveland Quarries Co. Tiffin, Ohio, U.S.A.".
And the Brown and Sharpe plastic decimal equivalents card.
There was also a small 3 page Table of Constants for a Robbins Magna-Sine Univ-Angle Sine-Plate.  Omer E. Robbins Company, Detroit 8, Michigan.  When did the Post Office stop using "zones"?

Nice finds.

The internet says postal zones started in 1943 and were replaced by ZIP codes in 1963, but they weren't mandatory at first; but I imagine most companies moved to them as they reprinted their literature.

Yes, nice cabinet. I need to find one like that.
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

Zone Improvement Program = ZIP  If you read the wikipedia article on ZIP code, there is mention of Sectional Center Facilities corresponding to the first three digits of the 5-digit ZIP code.  Those mail sorting facilities were very noisy & I had deaf relatives who worked in one in Arizona because they were not distracted or bothered by the noise.
