Need help with THE BOSS
« on: January 08, 2018, 04:23:42 PM »
I bought The Boss at an auction, and paid a bit too much for it. It's a combination tool, with a hammer head and claw combined with a pair of pliers. Has a screwdriver on the end of one handle, a nail pry bar on the other, and a 6-inch ruler running along the edge. Overall tool measures about 9 inches long....
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

....One side is stamped THE BOSS Domestic Machine Co. PROV. R.I.
The other side is stamped Patent Applied For, along with an anchor-shaped logo.
But I can't seem to locate a patent, nor can I find any reference to a Domestic Machine Company that manufactured tools. Anybody else ever heard of them?

Notice that the tips of the pincers protrude a bit so you can grip a steeple and rock it loose a bit before getting a claw on it.
The ORIGINAL Northwoods.

Pg. 4 of the Dec. 2017 MVWC Newsletter noted this one & similar looking pieces in other sources.  Nothing definitive.

All I can offer is M.J. Donnelly had one and could find no other info about the Co. or tool other than what is on it.
A person who could really read human minds would be privileged to gaze on some correct imitations of chaos.

Thanks!
Stan I did note the tool pictured in Smith's book appears to be the same as mine, but they label it generically as "combination tool" which really didn't help much. The information in Cope's book on the other hand - (Dang, I always forget to check Cope!) - is potentially helpful, but also muddies the water. The picture is titled THE ADAMS COMBINATION TOOL, which he claims was made by Millers Falls Co.

It sure does look like a match though. Even the "box joint" type pivot is the same.
