Friday Non-wrench Finds
« on: December 02, 2017, 10:40:14 AM »
Long day yesterday but well worth it. Almost a 12 hour day from the time I left the house until I returned home. I picked up these 3 non-wrench items. 2 double shoe lasts and a well used and loved Rosewood handled C. S. Osborne head knife. I'll show the wrenches in the wrench thread next.

I have never seen this old of a shoe last clamp or one with the center tension screw like this. Too bad the side nuts aren't hand made wig nuts, that would have made it even better.

Those hex nuts do look lost on there. Do you think it did have a couple of fancy wing nuts on it originally. Seems only fitting that it would have looking at that pressure screw.
A person who could really read human minds would be privileged to gaze on some correct imitations of chaos.

I've never seen that type, the springs remind me of the springs on the blacksmith post vise.

you have to at least swop the nuts for rusty square nuts until you find a pair of old wing nuts.

what size thread are the nuts ?  Frank

I haven't check the screw size yet but I think they are 10-32. The screws are old and are studs that are attached to the clamp section.

The plot thickens, they are 6 mm studs. I have some brass wing nuts I might be able to re-thread to 6 mm.

If you have any that can be re-tapped for 6 mm send me a message, I'd be interested in see what you have. I have to try one but I think a 1/4 20 will take a 6 mm tap and still work. At this point it is for display, maybe a flip, not sure yet. The other style bring crazy money on eBay lately.

I had some 1/4 20 wing bolts, cut the threaded section off and tapped them out to 6 mm. The new 6 mm thread is slightly different than the old studs but carefully running the wing nut on the old stud several times has them working like they should.
