Hello, Sean. It all comes down to your needs. Ladders are classified by weight carrying ability, and the corresponding type. Light Duty has a 225 lb. rating. Heavy Duty would be a Type 1 , 250 lb. rating. Type 1A is 300 lbs. , Extra Heavy Duty. There are higher weight carrying ladders, I believe up to 375 lbs. Safe standing height on an 8' stepladder is 6 feet, so keep that in mind . At work we use Werner and Louisville. I hope this helps, Lou

I'm with Lou: brand is less important than weight rating, and features.  Ladders with higher weight ratings tend also, in my experience, to be more rigid and thus less nervous-making when you're on the top "legal" step; so even if you're a featherweight, your 100 pounds will be happier on a #1 or #1A ladder than on a #3.

Look at what's locally available and their features, and buy the heaviest weight rating you can afford.

I find wood step ladders to be sturdier and more stable than fiberglass. I don,t recall ever doing a price comparison  but it boils down to what you can afford and what you prefer. I agree 100% with the other comments, Get a good one with a heavy weight rating. It can depend a lot on how much you are going to use it. Before I retired I had quite a few employees and I found wood ladders stood up the best.

I'm partial to the Babcock a-frame extensions. But I don't know if they are even in business anymore.

A 6' ladder with the extension would get high enough to reach 13'.

We'd carry an 8' ladder with an extension from a 10' ladder. You could reach over 20' up.

Very sturdy, just set the height, climb up with pipe on your shoulder,  and swing one leg over to the other side. You are safely on the ladder and can reach around in all directions.

Ladders are off limits for me now.
